Concealer: The magical multitasker

Concealer: The magical multitasker

When it comes to makeup essentials, few products rival the transformative power of concealer. From hiding under-eye circles to camouflaging blemishes, evening out skin tone, and even contouring or highlighting, concealer is the ultimate multitasker. That’s why I was surprised to discover how many women I know personally don’t use concealer at all. They either see it as an unnecessary extra step in their routine, are unaware of its dramatic benefits, or feel intimidated because they don’t know how to apply it properly. As a makeup artist, I can tell you that, when used correctly, concealer is the magic wand of your makeup bag.

Concealer has roots dating back to ancient civilizations, where ingredients like clay and plant-based pigments were used to hide imperfections and even out skin tone. It wasn’t until the 20th century that the modern version of concealer, as we know it today, was born. One of the earliest commercial concealers was launched by Max Factor in the 1950s, called Erace. This corrective stick was developed to hide blemishes and discoloration on film and television actors in front of the camera. Its popularity quickly grew, and by the 1960s and ’70s, concealer had become a staple in every woman’s makeup arsenal.

Over the decades, formulations have improved and diversified to suit different skin types, tones, and concerns. Today, concealers come in a wide range of formulas, shades, textures, and finishes, with many infused with active skincare ingredients, making them one of the most versatile products in any makeup collection.

Some of concealer’s main benefits include:

Covers Imperfections
From acne to hyperpigmentation, concealer provides targeted coverage to minimize the appearance of skin imperfections without the need for a full face of foundation.

Brightens Under-Eyes
A lightweight, illuminating concealer can instantly brighten dark circles and camouflage under-eye bags, giving you a more refreshed and awake appearance.

Evens Skin Tone
Concealer helps neutralize uneven skin tone, such as redness around the nose or dark spots, for a more uniform and balanced complexion.

Supports Color Correction
Color-correcting concealers come in shades like green, peach, and lavender to address specific concerns. For example, green neutralizes redness, while peach counteracts blue or purple under-eye tones.

Multitasker for the Entire Face
Concealer can double as a highlighter, contour, eyeshadow primer, and even a base for lipstick.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to concealer. Depending on your skin’s needs, the level of coverage you want, and your preferred finish, there are several different types to choose from:

  1. Liquid Concealer
Ideal for most skin types, liquid concealer offers buildable coverage, making it perfect for the under-eye area and spot concealing.
  2. Cream Concealer
Usually found in pots or palettes, cream concealer provides fuller coverage with a richer texture, making it especially suitable for dry or mature skin.
  3. Stick Concealer
With its thicker consistency and high pigment concentration, stick concealer is great for targeting blemishes, dark spots, or even for contouring.
  4. Color-Correcting Concealer
Available in tinted hues, color-correcting concealers are applied before flesh-toned concealer to neutralize specific discolorations. A great example is the Ofra Cosmetics Magic Roulette Concealer featured below.

Concealer can be applied either before or after foundation, but applying it afterward often requires less product since the foundation already provides a base layer. It also makes it easier to see where the foundation falls short and needs extra attention. While applying concealer may seem straightforward, a few strategic techniques can make a noticeable difference.

Choose the Right Shade: For blemishes, match your concealer to your exact skin tone. For brightening under the eyes, go one shade lighter with a peach or orange undertone to cancel out darkness.

Layer Strategically: Apply a small amount of concealer in thin layers and build coverage gradually as needed. Using too much product can lead to caking, creasing, or emphasizing texture.

For Under-Eyes: Apply only where discoloration appears or shadows are cast. Avoid applying a solid semicircle shape over the entire area—this keeps the brightness focused only on the darker areas for a more natural, lifted effect.

On Blemishes: Dab a thicker concealer directly onto the spot, gently blend the edges, and set with powder for longer-lasting coverage.

To Highlight: Use a concealer a few shades lighter than your skin tone on the center of the forehead, bridge of the nose, chin, and tops of the cheekbones to reflect light and create dimension.

To Contour: Use a concealer a few shades darker to define cheekbones, temples, the sides of the nose, and the jawline, then blend for a sculpted, chiseled look.

As Primer: Apply a thin layer of concealer on eyelids or lips to create a neutral base that enhances the pigment and longevity of eyeshadow or lipstick.

Blend Properly: Fingers can work well for blending since they warm up the product for a seamless finish. However, using a brush or a damp beauty sponge (like the ones shown below) can offer more precision and control.

Finally, always set your concealer with a finely milled translucent loose powder using a brush or a puff to prevent creasing and extend wear.

Concealer is a beauty essential that empowers you to feel more confident in your own skin, whether you’re a makeup minimalist or a full-glam enthusiast. It can help you fake eight hours of sleep, cover an unexpected breakout, or sculpt your features for a special event. With today’s advancements in formulas, shade ranges, and hybrid skincare benefits, concealer is more versatile, effective, and essential than ever before.
