Sometimes it seems impossible to get smooth, straight strands without sacrificing fun, bouncy volume. Thankfully, we’ve got some pumped-up tricks to add body to even the longest, thickest manes.
Like any other hairstyle that uses heat to achieve its look, start by protecting your locks. Taylor loves using Kenra’s Perfect Blowout Cream after a shower because it not only prevents heat damage and cuts down on frizz, but also makes her naturally coarse, wavy hair lay flat before the styling even begins.
After brushing through your hair, section it off. Taylor starts with the underside of her hair by sectioning off at the top of her ears. This keeps things clear and organized so not a single strand is missed.
Once the hair is sectioned, it’s on to styling. Taylor uses Chi’s G2 Ceramic & Titanium Hairstyling Iron with 1” plates, though other sizes are also available. It’s important to remember, however, to never straighten sections thicker than the plates of the iron.
After getting as close to the roots as possible, Taylor instructs to go slow down the stand because limiting the section to just one pass reduces heat damage, rather than doing multiple quick passes. She then flips her wrist slightly at the ends to give a slight curl for more movement.
After completing this section, create a second section from eyeball level back and repeat the same steps as before, with one addition. This is where the volume really shows up!
For the hair close to the face, still get close to the roots but then curl the iron toward the face. Hold it there for a few seconds, let go, and hold that strand of hair with the kink in it away from the face until it cools. Then hold the roots above the kink and straighten from the end of the bevel down to the ends like normal.
Brush out the last section and get ready to add major volume here. Once you’re close to your part, create that kink close to the roots again, hold it as it cools, then hold the roots and straighten, just as before.
All of this helps to create body and movement while still having sleek, straight tresses.
Finally, Taylor sets the look with Kenra Professional’s Perfect Medium Spray 13. She sprays this along the hairline to maintain that bump in volume and to secure the look against frizz and flyaways.
