The Science Behind SkinCeuticals

The Science Behind SkinCeuticals

Since its founding in 1997, SkinCeuticals established itself as a leader in advanced skincare with a dedication to science and research, and with innovation at the core of its mission.

Created after decades of skin cancer research on the benefits of antioxidants, SkinCeuticals’ formulations are proven to penetrate the skin and deliver highly concentrated pure actives. Used and approved by dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and medical spas, SkinCeuticals products even complement aesthetic procedures as they aim to correct signs of aging, protect healthy skin, and prevent future damage.

Founding scientist and chief medical advisor Dr. Sheldon Pinnell established SkinCeuticals as the skincare industry’s leading authority for topical antioxidants. By incorporating powerful antioxidants into elixirs, Pinnell found a way to prevent skin damage from harmful elements like free radicals, pollution, and sunlight, while also counteracting cellular degeneration.

His trailblazing studies—and 40 years of groundbreaking research and development in preventing skin aging and cancer—led him to patent a stable form of vitamin C that successfully penetrates the skin, giving it eight times its natural antioxidant protection. That 1992 Duke Antioxidant Patent became the brand’s core and in 1997 the line launched with two products: Serum 10 and Serum 15. These topical solutions developed by Pinnell forever changed the way people care for their skin and propelled SkinCeuticals to the gold standard of antioxidant skincare today.

SkinCeuticals developed the use of cosmeceuticals, which are cosmetic products with medically beneficial bioactive ingredients; a hybrid of prescription-based products and over-the-counter cosmetics, if you will. They are clinically proven to enhance skincare effectiveness and are designed to combat visible signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, and sagging skin.

In 2004, SkinCeuticals began using an integrated skincare approach by partnering with professionals like dermatologists and plastic surgeons and having them offer advanced skincare solutions to their in-office patients. This enabled the brand to develop a customized approach to each patient’s specific individual needs and deliver optimal results. The products are designed to work well alone but yield even greater results when combined as part of a customized regimen.

2005 brought the launch of one of SkinCeuticals’ most celebrated products, C E Ferulic which combines ferulic acid with vitamins C and E. This Holy Grail of serums has been clinically proven to reduce combined oxidative damage from free radicals by up to 41% and remain effective for a minimum of 72 hours. Even the tinted brown bottles are specifically designed to protect the delicate elixir inside from light exposure.

Marking its 25th anniversary this year, SkinCeuticals continues to build on Pinnell’s research by creating new products based on his findings and ideas. Considered the #1 medical skincare in the U.S. and branded “the antioxidant authority,” they have produced four generations of topical antioxidants, 10 patents, and more than 200 published clinical studies.

Pinnell passed away in July of 2013, but his legacy lives on through the ongoing passion and dedication SkinCeuticals continues to put into research and product formulations. Today the brand has the same science-driven approach that amassed a cult following among celebrities, models, and influencers alike. The product line has also expanded to include an entire range of quality-tested skincare solutions that improve the skin’s health and appearance second to none.
