Unless you have been living under a rock, you’ve probably seen the 2023 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover featuring 81-year-old domestic diva/media mogul Martha Stewart.
When I profiled her in my blog last year, little did I know that Stewart would make history as the oldest model ever to grace the SI cover. She looks incredible in a white one-piece swimsuit by Monday Swimwear and a voluminous orange cover-up by Torso Creations. But it was her age-defying, radiant complexion and sexy, blonde beach hair that broke the internet.
One of four different covers this year, Stewart holds her own among the other—much younger—cover models: actress Megan Fox, Grammy-winning singer Kim Petras, and model Brooks Nader. Perhaps Stewart’s brief stint as a model in her teens and early twenties gave her an edge, but whatever the reason, Stewart still shines amid the other three featured covers, even though each of them is less than half her age.
Stewart called the shoot “the opportunity of a lifetime” on her Instagram feed. She had only two months to prepare for it and told the Today Show she did so by giving up eating bread and pasta and drinking alcohol along with increasing her Pilates classes to every other day.
She also credits clean living and her usual routine of regular facials, green juice, sunblock, vitamins, and “very healthy, good hair” for her youthful appearance. She claims to have never had any cosmetic surgery and maintains that the SI photo shoot accurately captured her as she is.
Stewart’s longtime makeup artist of 15 years, Daisy Toye, is the talent behind her bronzed, dewy glow. She opened up to People magazine about the experience, calling Stewart’s skin “everything,” noting “she has the most amazing complexion.”
Her complexion, no doubt, helped provide a flawless canvas for Toye to work her magic, but there was one key makeup product in particular she used to give Stewart her luminous glow. Surprisingly, that product is a $16 drugstore find: the L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion Natural Glow Enhancer.
L’Oréal Paris’ True Match Lumi Glotion Natural Glow Enhancer is a multitasking highlighter that instantly hydrates and aluminizes the skin for a fresh, natural glow. In addition to delivering a dewy, radiant finish, it can be used as a primer, lightweight foundation, contour, and body highlighter.
Infused with glycerin and shea butter for all-day continuous hydration, this formula can be used anywhere on the face or body for a healthy, brighter-looking complexion and to enhance the skin’s natural, youthful glow. It easily layers for added dimension, and can be worn alone, under/over makeup, or on targeted areas for an extra pop of luminosity.
Toye told People she is obsessed with the L’Oréal Glow Enhancer and uses it every day on Stewart. In fact, she said she goes through a tube every week. With over 22,000 4.5-star (out of 5) online reviews, she is obviously not the only one obsessed with this product.
It wasn’t just Stewart’s youthful glow that got attention. Her voluminous, beachy, blonde waves made waves of their own online. Living Proof Brand Stylist DJ Quintero oversaw Stewart’s locks for the shoot. Photographer Ruven Afanador wanted disheveled, sexy hair with lots of movement, so Quintero decided to create a modern take on Marylin Monroe.
Quintero first reached for the Living Proof Full Thickening Mousse and applied it to Stewart’s wet hair.
This weightless mousse gives hair fullness and volume with a flexible hold that lasts five times longer. It makes fine hair look and feel fuller with its patented Thickening Molecule that creates thickening dots between hair strands. This mousse also provides heat protection up to 320ºF/160º C.
Next, Quintero dried Stewart’s hair, then spritzed it with the Full Dry Volume & Texture Spray for an imperfect, lived-in look with volume and texture.
This award-winning, versatile texturizing spray delivers instant and long-lasting volume and texture. It gives tresses a buildable, no-slip grip for increased styling versatility, and lightly absorbs oil to instantly transform fine, flat, or thin hair. This spray also provides heat protection up to 410ºF/210ºC.
To lock the look in place, Quintero used the Flex Hairspray to set, style, and finish Stewart’s hair without stiffness.
This lightweight, medium-hold hairspray has Flexible Web Technology: A blend of firm and flexible polymers allows for maximum versatility on damp or dry hair and delivers flexible, touchable control. Conditioning emollients add lubrication and shine to locks while vitamin B5 adds softness. This spray leaves hair brushable, layerable, and reworkable while providing heat protection up to 410ºF/210ºC.
Finally, Quintero applied the Instant De-Frizzer to Stewart’s hair to combat frizz against humidity. It was also used throughout the shoot for quick, easy touch-ups.
This dry conditioning spray controls up to 92% of frizz while leaving hair softer, smoother, and shinier. Amaranth seed extract and a biomimetic five-oil blend replenish the hair’s natural lipids and help block humidity that causes frizz. It also uses high gloss emollients to enhance the hair’s shine, and a cationic conditioning agent to make the locks softer and more manageable.
All these Living Proof products are vegan and cruelty-free, as well as safe for colored and chemically-treated hair. They are all formulated without parabens, phthalates, silicone, sulfates, or formaldehyde as well.
