Attraction is a complicated concept that involves everything from upbringing and genetics to personal grooming and preferences. While you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, one thing that can tip the scales can’t even be seen: Scent.
The way someone smells can tell you a lot about them. With the wide variety of fragrances in the world, there’s at least one scent out there for every season, mood, and ideal.
While clothes, jewelry, makeup, and hair all add to a person’s style, having a signature scent is the most luxurious and impactful accessory you can invest in. During my never-ending search for the perfect perfume, I decided to try out Byredo’s Gypsy Water Eau de Parfum.

This perfume is woody and aromatic, designed as an ode to the nomadic Romani culture. It first opens with bergamot, juniper berries, lemon, and pepper, followed by incense, orris, and pine needles in the heart. The base notes of amber, sandalwood, and vanilla give this composition its distinctly warm and woody scent like a night in the forest spent staring at the stars.
Going through each layer, bergamot is a citrus fruit from Italy with a sweet and tart scent. This plays off of the lemon for an immediately bright, citrusy aroma that’s pulled down by the fresh spice of pepper. The juniper berries are clean but spicy, introducing the first touch of woody notes to this perfume.
In the heart, orris root adds an almost powdery and delicately floral aroma, but it’s balanced in its woody, earthy, rooty smell. The pine needles continue to build on the scent of green woods while the incense adds warm spice and another layer of wood.

Perfume dries down from its application to its base notes, which last the longest and have the biggest impact. Sandalwood is rich and deep, while amber is intensely warm with tinges of sweetness. The vanilla adds a sweet, warm, and cozy atmosphere to the composition.
This perfume reminds me of rich soil, ancient forests, and homey campfires. It’s woody and spicy, but also clean, smokey, and comforting. This is a scent I could wear any time of the year, but especially during autumn, winter, and evenings out.
