Review: The Original Makeup Eraser

Wipe away the day without hurting your skin or the Earth

One of the most important steps for proper skincare seems so simple, yet I find myself skipping it more often than I’d like to admit: removing my makeup at night.

When I’m exhausted, using a balm, solution, or wash to remove my makeup, getting water everywhere, then washing my face again with an actual cleanser (followed by whatever other skincare I need) sounds like such a chore. There are always makeup wipes, but they’re bad for the environment as single-use products where most don’t break down and contain leaching chemicals, etc. Some don’t even work that well, while others use ingredients that aren’t good for your skin, like alcohol, parabens, and honestly, who knows what else.

Not to mention that sometimes I’m just busy, tired, or don’t feel like taking the time to wash all my makeup off, just to put it back on in the morning. That’s why when I heard about The Makeup Eraser, I knew I had to test it out.

The Product

The Original Makeup Eraser is a plush cloth made of thin fibers that feel velvety soft, like the most comforting stuffed animal you’ll ever touch. Each polyester fiber is 10-50 times thinner than a single human hair, and this large cloth is double-sided with short fibers that erase makeup and longer threads that exfoliate the skin.

What’s more, this makeup-removing towel works using only itself and some warm or hot water. It’s also as sustainable and convenient as it is effective. It can be spot cleaned at any point, but it works best when machine-washed once or twice a week for up to five years of use.

The fibers on this vegan, cruelty-free, and hypoallergenic towel grip makeup and pull it off the skin. On the other hand, cotton bath towels use looped fabric that smears makeup rather than picking it up. Even microfiber cloths can use a cheap combination of polyester, polyamide, and polypropylene, which can be too abrasive and irritate the skin.

The Test

I first used this makeup-removing towel on the easy stuff. It immediately wiped away my highlight and contour, and after a few more swipes, it also took off all of my base makeup and even my eyebrows.

As well as my makeup, this towel also got rid of some of the dirt and oil that built up on my skin during the day.

I wanted to put this towel to the test, so I moved on to some of the hardest makeup to remove: waterproof mascara and glitter. After one quick swipe, a lot of the glitter was already gone. A few more scrubbing swipes did get rid of more, but not all, of my makeup.

For super long-lasting and tough waterproof formulas, I recommend soaking this eraser in hot water (as hot as you can comfortably stand), then applying the cloth over the makeup and letting it sit for a couple of seconds before trying to wipe it away.

If anything is still stuck—like some of my stubborn glitter—you can also use a makeup melting balm (I used Monat’s Makeup Vanishing Balm), then wipe it away with a dry section of the towel. It’s so soft, and it pulls everything off of the skin without any irritation.

The Verdict

All in all, I really like this makeup remover. It works well at removing most makeup and can even get off the stubborn stuff with a little extra work.

I love that The Makeup Eraser is not only good for my skin’s health but the environment’s health as well.

What I love most of all, however, is that it’s something I will actually use. Even when I don’t feel like washing my entire face, I know I can at least wet this soft, gentle cloth and get most (if not all) of my makeup off in one quick step. I can see myself using The Makeup Eraser to the end of its life, so I absolutely recommend you give it a try as well.
