Transforming Bespoke Beauty into Attainable Treatments

Erno Laszlo has been synonymous with science-backed, ritual-focused skincare for almost 100 years. A pioneer of solutions rooted in research, results, proven ingredients, and combining skin health with lifestyle, Erno Laszlo celebrates the confidence that comes with skin wellness.

History of Erno Laszlo

Even as beauty evolved over the decades, Erno Laszlo’s ethos stayed steady: empower women to feel confident in their skin.

In 1927, Doctor Erno Laszlo was one of the first to give women bespoke beauty rituals when he opened the Erno Laszlo Institute for Scientific Cosmetology in Budapest, complete with a lab for developing custom treatments. A man of innovation, he was the first to introduce the idea of double cleansing, pH-balancing skincare, no-makeup makeup, personalized solutions, and more.

Cleansing with cold cream was standard in the 1930s, but Dr. Laszlo emphasized the importance of using two steps: cleansing oil to loosen and remove the grime from the day and a cleansing bar to stimulate and rejuvenate the face.

In the 1950s, Dr. Laszlo partnered with the high-end department store Saks to expand the brand, and fashion publications like Vogue, WWD, and Harper’s Bazaar featured Erno Laszlo in the 1960s. Even Suzy Parker, the world’s first “supermodel,” became a devotee.

Dr. Laszlo passed away in 1973, but the brand continued his legacy with product innovation through the ‘80s and ’90s. After moving from its consultation-only, membership-based model, Erno Laszlo today is accessible widely with personalized rituals for every person and skin type.

Committed to Sustainability

Greener Packaging

Just like its skincare solutions and rituals, Erno Laszlo leads with forward-thinking sustainability practices. By 2025, the brand pledged to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging, move away from single-use sachets, ensure all packaging contains an average of 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, and introduce glass packaging whenever possible.

For its packaging, Erno Laszlo is prioritizing less virgin plastic and using recyclable plastics by moving to exclusively the most recyclable resins available, as well as eliminating “bad” resins. By partnering with Better Future Factory, the packaging went through a plastics audit and the duo created a roadmap for designing sustainable alternatives.

There is also a plan to switch to 100% post-consumer waste (PCW), use FSC-certified paper, and eliminate wasteful space by resizing cartons.

As well as adjusting its plastic uses, metals are also being phased out. Metals and plastics need to be sorted and separated to be recycled, so the brand is removing metal pieces from pump actuators. Instead, it’s using a new airless serum packaging made from 100% Polypropylene (PP) to make it a single easily recyclable item.

This also means replacing trickier materials such as plastic foil packets.

As a recent example of Erno Laszlo packaging innovation, the new VTM Micro-Essence maintains a sleek, premium appearance while adhering to the strict Clean Science standards and Sustainability 2025 commitment.

The cap uses a mono-material to reduce the amount of plastic needed, foil decoration is minimized, the bottle is glass with no additional parts for easy rinsing and recycling, and the carton uses 100% PCW & FSC-certified uncoated board as well as no coatings, for easy mainstream recycling.

Cleaner Skincare

Beyond packaging, Erno Laszlo cares about how the products it creates affect the skin’s (and self’s) safety and well-being.

The last time the FDA passed legislation or regulations regarding skincare ingredients was in 1938. The United States FOC currently only bans 11 harmful ingredients.

With a belief that self-regulation isn’t enough—and that the beauty industry needs more intervention and oversight—Erno Laszlo adopted a Clean Promise for its skincare formulations starting in 2018.

The brand’s Clean Promise resulted in eliminating a further 51 ingredients for higher standards of safety and proven efficacy. This includes ensuring all products are free from sulfates, parabens, silicones, and mineral oil. Overall, there are more than 2,000 potentially harmful chemicals that remain off-limits, and Erno Laszlo updates this list every six months.

As part of its Clean Promise, Erno Laszlo believes transparency is the first step to greater understanding. It offers a full list of ingredients used, as well as a description of each.

Star Skincare

Dr. Laszlo treated some of the most famous faces of the last century with his signature products and personalized care.

In the height of love for the silver screen, the world became obsessed with the beauty secrets of the rich and famous. During the 1940s, Marilyn Monroe swore by the Phormula 3-8 cream (today’s Phormula 3-10 Skin Repair) the doctor created especially to fade a scar on her stomach. She also used the all-purpose moisturizer Active Phelityl Cream to achieve her on-screen glow.

Screen icon Audrey Hepburn was a huge fan of Dr. Laszlo as well. She’s even quoted saying, “I owe 50% of my beauty to my mother, and the other 50% to Erno Laszlo.” Her product of choice was the Phelityl Night Cream.

Mother, beauty icon, fashion icon, First Lady, and philanthropist Jackie Onasis received custom prescriptions from Dr. Laszlo himself. Known for her “luminous and unforgettable screen performances,” Greta Garbo stood by the Shake-It Tinted Treatment.

Today, Erno Laszlo continues to be the skincare brand of choice for top celebrities around the world.

VTM Micro-Essence

New to the Erno Laszlo lineup, this restorative facial essence lotion is scientifically formulated to treat dry, pigmented, and damaged skin, revealing lasting radiance. Refreshing, weightless hydration melts into the skin through a pour-to-activate process, refining pores and improving tone and texture over time. This leaves the skin instantly energized, balanced, and deeply purified for an overall soft and supple complexion.

This VTM Micro-Essence uses patented microfluidic technology that enables thousands of calibrated, uniformly sized, encapsulated oil droplets to float in a clear, aqueous gel. Each of these jellified bubbles features a protective membrane holding meadowfoam and raspberry oil. These precious oils remain suspended until the moment the Micro-Essence hits the skin, releasing the full potency of these and other powerhouse ingredients upon every use.

With every application, the droplets burst, activating each ingredient and skincare benefit as they melt into the skin. The result is a unique sensation: the cooling hydration of a water splash (96% liquid phase) with the silky-soft nutrition of an oil serum (4% oil phase).

Alongside these nourishing oils, pore-perfecting marine extract from the coast of France smooths skin’s texture while luminous Madonna Lily, clinically proven to brighten the complexion, nurtures a more uniform tone.
