How to Get the Best Hair: Starting Your Olaplex Routine

Where to start if you want to try the Olaplex line for the first time

If you want long, healthy, mermaid-like hair, you need to use the Olaplex haircare line. With so many product options and possible steps, this brand may seem overwhelming at first, but it will work wonders for your hair and it’s really simple to start with the basics and build up your routine.

I started my Olaplex hair journey a couple of months ago with the No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner. Just switching out for this combination is a major game-changer and you’ll start noticing a difference after one or two washes.

I have long, thick, dry hair and this combo adds back moisture while maintaining my hair’s volume and minimizing my frizz. My mom has thin, oily hair and these made her locks less greasy as well as helped them look thicker and grow longer. This shampoo and condition put all hair types in their best condition and help them style more easily.

Once your hair has adjusted to this new wash routine, you can add in the No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask.

I’ve been using a deep conditioning mask in my hair routine for a year, and it’s been a lifesaver for my dry, long, frizzy hair. It injects moisture into the strands to help smooth them out, soften dry ends, and increase elasticity to prevent breakage.

I apply Olaplex’s mask in the shower after washing and conditioning my hair. I start by running it through from my mid-lengths to the ends, then back up from the roots back down to the tips. I’ll stay in the shower and let it sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing it out.

Because I have dry hair, I use this treatment once or twice a week, but not every time I shower. Shorter or thinner hair might only need it once a week or every other week, but it cuts down on frizz and detangles locks so they’re smooth and manageable right out of the shower.

Once you have this basic routine down, you can start incorporating other parts of the Olaplex line.

I started using the No.7 Bonding Oil as an after-shower, pre-styling treatment. I was hesitant to use an oil at first because I didn’t want my hair to look greasy, but this doesn’t do that.

My ends get very dry—much dryer than the rest of my hair—and when I style it they look frayed and fried. Before I style, I shake a few drops of this oil onto my palms, massage it in my hands, and swipe it over the ends.

You can use this oil all over as long as you avoid the roots, and it adds more hydration to the hair, tames the ends, and smooths some of the frizz for a more cohesive look.

Finally, you can also incorporate the No.6 Bond Smoother into your routine.

This is a repairing leave-in styling cream that not only nourishes and protects the hair but minimizes frizz. I have always struggled with frizz, and this entire Olaplex line has helped add an insane amount of hydration into my hair that controls some of that frizziness, but sometimes I still need a little bit of extra moisture and frizz control before I style.

After showering, I take a dime-sized amount of this cream, rub it between my hands, and slowly caress it through my hair before styling.

I love to use this leave-in formula every time I want to straighten my hair because that’s when it gets the driest and frizziest. I work it in from about an inch from my roots all the way to my ends, and it makes a huge difference.

Whether you just start with switching out your shampoo and conditioner or jump into an entirely new routine, Olaplex’s line is incredible at helping, healing, smoothing, and styling all hair types.
