Haircare Spotlight: Slip’s Silk Hair and Sleep Accessories

Anti Aging, Anti Sleep Crease, and Anti Bed Head with Pure High-Quality Silk

Family-owned and operated, Slip is an Australian-based brand with high-quality pure silk hair and sleep products that deliver real results and real benefits in as few as four nights. With more than 70 prestigious beauty awards, it’s really no wonder why Slip is a successful and well-recommended solution for hair and skin care.

The Beginning of Slip

In 2003, Slip founder Fiona Stewart was facing extremely sensitive skin and thinning hair as a side effect of her prescribed acne medication. Her dermatologist recommended trying a silk pillowcase, and after weeks of searching for the right one, Fi eventually found the best silk she could find and wrapped it around her pillow instead.

The results were immediate and dramatic.

With the help of her partner, Justin Dubois, Slip began as a living room start-up in 2004. Dubois worked closely with the technical team of one of the largest and longest-running silk suppliers in the world to create the brand’s pure silk products.

Since then, Slip evolved into an international business with offices and distribution centers in NY, London, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, and Amsterdam, but the family-owned business is still headquartered in Brisbane Australia.

The Silk

Slip uses 6A mulberry silk for its products, which leads to an incredible combination of shine, thickness, softness, and durability. Mulberry silk is the best silk you can buy for textile purposes for its soft and durable qualities.

Silk is also graded on an A, B, and C scale with A being the finest, highest quality silk. The number grading takes that a step further with 6A being the highest quality of that specific type of silk.

Finally, you can’t use thread count for silk because the threads are so thin; you would easily reach a high thread count if that were the case. Instead, silk is graded by weight and density in an old imperial measurement called “momme,” where a higher momme means there are more strands of silk per 100 yards of fabric.

The higher the number is, the higher quality and more durable the silk, on a scale of 11 to 25 momme. The thicker or heavier the silk, the more it drapes, the softer it feels, and the longer it lasts.

While 19 momme is higher than 11 momme, it would still be considered “lower quality” silk, and 25 momme is too heavy for clothes or bedding and is usually used for décor, like curtains. Slip’s silk is in between at a perfect 22 momme.

Some less reputable silk pillowcase suppliers measure the momme at different stages during the production process, rather than at the end. In other words, they claim a certain momme count, but it’s false. On the other hand, Slip guarantees its measurement of 22 momme.

The Slip

We spend a third of our lives in bed, and we know Slip uses incredibly high-quality silk, but why use silk pillowcases and hair accessories at all? Let’s start with why silk is superior to cotton or satin materials.

There is a big difference between satin and silk, especially when it comes to pillowcases.

Silk is a natural fiber that’s both soft and breathable, whereas satin is a synthetic finish. While petroleum-based synthetic satin may feel nicer and soft, it’s actually thinner, rougher, and “sweats.” Slip silk pillowcases also have a luxurious charmeuse finish without that fake, super-shiny, reflective synthetic satin look

All Slip products use specially commissioned Slipsilk (6A mulberry silk), which was scientifically tested by an independent third-party lab. Compared to widely available cotton pillowcases with a 220-360 thread count, Slipsilk creates less friction to reduce stretching and tugging on delicate facial skin, and absorbs significantly less face cream, so you can help keep your skin’s moisture and valuable face and hair products where they belong: on your face and hair.

As skin ages, it also loses elasticity. The friction and pressure we put on our facial skin can cause sleep creases, and while these usually go away later in the day, they can be gradually ‘ironed in’ over the years, causing those creases to become more pronounced and longer lasting. With 43% less friction on average than those cotton pillowcases, Slip pillowcases help prevent sleep creases.

Slip pillowcases visibly improve the appearance of fine lines as well as skin hydration, texture, and luminosity for smoother, more youthful-looking complexions. But it isn’t just our skin that improves with Slip.

Two nights on a Slip pure silk pillowcase preserves curls, maintains hairstyles, banishes bed head, and reduces frizz and tangles. The gentle, hair-friendly silk makes hair more manageable.

While hand washing is best for a silk pillowcase—as the gentler it’s washed, the longer it will keep its sheen and “Slip”— Slip pillowcases are machine washable as well, which is a huge plus.

If you’re going to machine wash your Slip pillowcase, make sure to not use bleach and do use pH-neutral detergents and softeners, or ones that specify they work with silk. Also, anything even slightly above 85ºF will change the silk dramatically, so wash it on cold or one level above cold. Finally, do not tumble dry your silk Slip products; always allow them to air dry.

The Environment

Not only does Slip care enough to use only the highest quality materials and non-toxic dyes in their products, but they have taken steps to care about their communities as well.

Since 1993, Women For Women International has invested in the power of over 500,000 women who are survivors of war and conflict. In 2022, Slip donated £100,000 to Women For Women International to aid in their quest to support these women and help them rebuild their families, lives, and communities.

Rachel Boketa, the Women For Women International Country Director for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, told Slip, “you have our deepest gratitude for choosing to invest in the power of women and helping make the world more equal, peaceful and prosperous.”

One Tree Planted is a non-profit reforestation organization that aids in environmental conservation and restoration across the globe. Between April 22 and December 31, 2022, Slip partnered with One Tree Planted to plant one tree for every online order placed with a minimum of 100,000 trees.

Slip also donated one million diapers to Baby2Baby in 2022. Baby2Baby is a nonprofit organization that provides children living in poverty across America with diapers, clothing, and basic necessities every child deserves. Over the last decade, Baby2Baby has distributed over 200 million items to children in homeless shelters, domestic violence programs, foster care, hospitals, and underserved schools, as well as children who have lost everything in the wake of disaster.

Finally, Slip works closely with its suppliers to ensure fair workplace practices and that they meet the most stringent international standards when it does come to the materials’ manufacturing.
