I love rocking an everyday beachy wave, but it’s fun to mix hairstyles up sometimes. When I want a look with extra glam, I like to create tight curls full of volume from the roots to the twisted ends.
My hair tends to frizz when I style it, so I start with a heat protectant that minimizes frizz. I’m obsessed with Redken’s One United Multi-Benefit Treatment Spray because it not only prevents heat damage and frizz, but it also works as an amazing detangler, so I use it both for myself and on my girls’ hair. It is a huge bottle, so it lasts forever, and it smells incredible to boot.
Then I take a dime-sized amount of the Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother on my fingers, then run it from the roots to the tips of my hair, but especially on the ends. It adds moisture, which heat styling sucks away, and also prevents frizz after styling.
After letting the heat-protecting treatments sit for a minute, I section my hair into thirds, starting with the underside from the top of my ears back and the rest tied away.
When I style my hair in waves, I like to use my curling wand, but for this look, I prefer using a traditional curling iron with a clamp. My favorite is the BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Curling Iron with a 1” barrel because not only does it heat up quickly, but it also reaches high temperatures (up to 450ºF), which I need for my long, thick locks. Also, it’s easy to work with because of its swiveling cord and cool-hold tip.
I brush through the bottom section of my hair and take small pieces to curl, smaller than what I’d take when creating waves. With the clamp facing the floor, I place this piece in the clamp, close it, then run it down the length of the lock until there’s about an inch of hair remaining at the end. I then wrap it up, let it sit for about 10 seconds, and pull the wand away to release the curl.
I repeat this with the rest of this section until it’s all curled, but I don’t brush it out yet. I spray the layer with Big Sexy Hair’s Spray & Play Harder—a high-hold hair spray—to set my curls and create that volumized look before moving onto the middle section below the crown of my head. I repeat the same steps for this section and the top of my hair: I brush it out, curl small pieces, and lock it down with hair spray.
Then, I use my fingers to lightly brush and separate the curls, helping them blend and fall into each other.
Finally, for some extra volume at the root, I use the Living Proof Perfect hair Day (PhD) Dry Shampoo. It not only adds great texture but also absorbs any excess oil (if I’m working with day two or three hair) and leaves an incredible scent. I spray a touch in, let it sit for a second, then tease out the roots to add some extra body close to the scalp.
Now my hair not only looks great, but it feels and smells great with enough bounce, body, and hold to stay all day.
