Curls, waves, and coiled locks are some of the hardest hair types to care for. Naturally curly hair can easily become limp, stringy, frizzy, or heavy if not given the proper care. Something I didn’t know about until I started my natural hair journey is caring for curls using a co-wash.
“Co-wash” is a method where you use a conditioner-based product (rather than a shampoo) every other wash or every few washes to maintain moisture in curly hair. Because curly hair is textured, it’s hard to maintain a good level of hydration, so this helps clean the locks without the scalp from getting too greasy or stripping away too much moisture, especially when the air is drier in the winter.
If you want to keep your natural curls healthy, I’ve discovered my favorite product to use is SheaMoisture’s Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Moisture Co-Wash. It’s easy to use, and you can use it before you get in the shower or the middle of it.
All you have to do is massage this co-wash onto your scalp and hair for three to five minutes, then rinse it out. This replaces the shampoo step, so you can do this every wash to every four or five washes, depending on how much hydration your hair needs. Then, go in with a clarifying shampoo and repeat the whole process.
Not only does this hydrate the hair, but it also conditions and detangles the tresses, and it skips a whole step of a hair care routine, so you can shower even faster.
If you want to keep your curls hydrated, try out this co-washing hack. And if you want more tips on caring for curly hair and starting a curly hair routine, check out our Ultimate Curly Girl Guide.
